Chatting with the Bible: 70 Short Stories based on Scripture
from the Old & New Testaments

I thought that it would be interesting to see what would happen if I collaborated with ChatGPT to write a short book based on Biblical stories. I carefully and thoughtfully chose stories from the Old and New Testaments based on my own familiarity and those that especially spoke to me. I read the original texts to review them for content and consistency and edited the stories where I thought it was appropriate. I suggested that ChatGPT emphasize themes or make connections between stories that I saw.

For each story I wrote my own reflections. Some are based on my experiences as a psychologist with my clients. I'm always indebted to my clients, as what I have learned from them has made me a better person. They are a blessing. Some reflections are based on my experience as a professor, as teaching Psychology has required me to have a thorough knowledge of the major theorists and developments in a field that strives to understand the human psyche and how to intervene in effective ways to help alleviate suffering.

Joseph Springer provides an accessible introduction to Christian scripture. Not a
commentary or concordance, but rather a book of short stories; this highly readable

In the unique process of story development, Dr. Springer chose 70 meaningful
passages from the Old and New Testament, developed parameters for the generation of
a short story, used ChatGBT to generate the story, and then painstakingly reviewed and
reworked the story to ensure its consistency with the scriptural source. For each story
he includes both the original scripture passage and his own thoughtful reflection. Those
reflections are drawn from his career as a psychologist and educator, his life as
husband and father, and his Christian faith journey.

What emerges is a deeply moving anthology from Genesis to Pentecost. While not a
text for the theologian or scripture scholar, Chatting with the Bible serves to spread the
Good News to those new to the Bible and to those familiar with the scripture who will
find the stories deepen their reflection.
